1. My Journey as a Leader in Dental Practice Management
I’m honored to share my journey and reflect on the incredible experiences that have shaped my career in dentistry.
The saying, “We make plans, and God laughs,” perfectly describes my path.
Initially, I planned to major in music and business, pursuing a career as a singer or music therapist. However, life took a turn when I left college to get married and began working in an accounting practice. It was there that I discovered my love for numbers and the stories they tell.
My foray into dentistry came when I was hired by three brothers in Duluth, MN, as a “rover dental assistant.” Unfortunately, I soon learned that fainting at the sight of blood wasn’t conducive to assisting in dental procedures. Instead of firing me, they moved me to the front desk. It was here that I found my true calling—managing the business side of dentistry.
From that point on, I embraced every challenge, developing skills in scheduling, insurance billing, collections, and patient communication. Over the next 25 years, I worked in four dental practices, each one teaching me invaluable lessons about practice management and teamwork. These experiences helped me refine my expertise and discover the importance of systems, leadership, and tracking metrics.
2. How It All Began: The Start of My Career in Dental Consulting
My journey into consulting wasn’t a direct one—it was full of learning moments, mentors, and growth. I was introduced to essential concepts like morning huddles, team meetings, and managing key performance indicators.
These foundational lessons laid the groundwork for everything I teach today. Systems are the backbone of any successful practice, and effective communication is the glue that holds everything together.

When I founded LJB Seminars, my mission was simple: to offer genuine, practical guidance to dental professionals. My focus has always been on creating real solutions that address the everyday challenges practices face.

Two common issues I see are the lack of effective systems and communication. Many practices also lack clear roles and responsibilities, which creates confusion. Addressing these areas is key to building a high-performing team and achieving lasting success.

One of the greatest joys of my career is hearing from practices that have experienced real, positive change. Whether it’s improved financial health or a stronger sense of teamwork, these transformations are deeply fulfilling.
