A Calmer Way to Lead a Dental Practice

What happens when mindset, culture, and ownership finally align

by TPD Editor in Chief

Dr. Martin Mendelson, Dentist • Author • Speaker • Leadership Voice in Dentistry

Private-practice dentistry has always required resilience. But for many dentists, the start of a new year brings more than fresh goals – it brings reflection. The kind that asks not just where the practice is headed, but how leadership has begun to feel along the way.

The long days. The constant decisions. The responsibility that doesn’t turn off when the office lights do. Even successful practices can begin to feel heavier than expected, especially when the leader feels responsible for everything and everyone.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to share this perspective with The Profitable Dentist community, because this pressure is real – and it’s shared.

Dr. Martin Mendelson understands that weight personally. A former practicing dentist, sought-after speaker, and leadership coach, Mendelson has spent decades working alongside dentist-owners who care deeply about their teams, their patients, and the legacy they’re building, but who want a calmer, more intentional way to lead.

In this conversation with The Profitable Dentist, Mendelson shares the experiences that shaped his work, the philosophy behind his coaching, and why meaningful change in dentistry rarely starts with doing more, but with choosing differently.

That philosophy didn’t emerge overnight – it was forged through his own transition from clinical dentistry to leadership coaching and ultimately led to the ideas that now define his work.

From the Operatory to Leadership Work

TPD: Martin, before coaching and speaking became your focus, you practiced dentistry yourself. How did that chapter shape the work you do today?

Mendelson:
I spent nearly ten years in clinical dentistry, and like many dentists, I took pride in the responsibility of patient care.  Dentistry wasn’t just my profession – it was my identity.

When a medical disability made it impossible for me to continue practicing, I didn’t just lose a career. I lost a sense of who I was. That loss became the foundation for my life’s work. It forced me to understand leadership, mindset, and identity at a deeper level.

While I was already serving as an emcee and resident faculty member at Spear Education, a period of personal challenge sparked deeper growth. Out of that growth came Metamorphosis Coaching, LLC, which expanded the coaching work I was already doing and helped me realize my purpose wasn’t gone, it had simply evolved.

“Most dentist-owners don’t need another strategy – they need clarity around how they’re leading and why it feels so heavy.”
— Martin

Who Martin Works with and Why

TPD: Who do you find yourself working with most often today?

Mendelson:
Dentist-owners. Specifically, dentist-owners who are experiencing leadership fatigue, team misalignment, and difficulty delegating without guilt or frustration.

My coaching style is grounded in compassionate accountability, mindset science, and emotional intelligence. I work with entire teams, not just the owner, because culture isn’t created in isolation.

When alignment improves, dentists regain time, make clearer decisions, build stronger cultures, and experience a renewed sense of fulfillment, both professionally and personally.

Core Philosophies Behind the Work

TPD: You often talk about mindset. Why does that matter so much?

Mendelson:
Because your thoughts create your reality. The way you think influences how you feel, how you act, and ultimately what shows up in your practice.

I developed the TEAM framework –   Thoughts, Emotions, Actions, Manifestation – to help dentists move from reactive leadership to intentional leadership. Optimism, supported by neuroscience, isn’t wishful thinking. It’s a strategy that improves clarity, resilience, and decision-making.  TEAM is the cornerstone of my first book.

Sustainable change doesn’t come from massive overhauls. It comes from small, intentional shifts – one move at a time.

“When leadership becomes intentional, teams don’t need to be managed as tightly, and dentists don’t have to carry everything alone.”
— Martin

The Culmination: One Move Makes All the Difference

Those same principles ultimately led Mendelson to author One Move Makes All the Difference, his latest professional work and a culmination of decades spent working with leaders, including dentist-owners.

“In this book, Martin Mendelson offers us both inspiration and concrete guidance. He beautifully weaves together storytelling and scientific research, seamlessly integrating emotion with reason, and grounding profound insights in both theory and practice. Whether you’re at a crossroads or simply seeking to take the next step in your personal or professional life, this book can help you make the move that makes all the difference.”

Founder, Happiness Studies Academy

The book centers on a simple but powerful premise: a single intentional decision can redirect the course of your leadership and your life. Drawing from real-world stories from inside and outside of dentistry, along with practical mindset tools, communication strategies, and case examples, the book serves as a companion for anyone ready to lead with clarity instead of chaos.

Released in December 2025, the book reflects the same philosophy Mendelson brings to his coaching and speaking engagements throughout dentistry.  Dental professionals can also earn 4 hours of continuing education credit by reading the book.

What Readers Can Expect Going Forward

TPD: You’ll be contributing regularly to The Profitable Dentist. What can readers expect?

Mendelson:
Honest insights from more than two decades in and around dentistry. Tools rooted in coaching psychology and real-world experience. Guest stories, case studies, and “one move” moments from dentists just like them.

There will be humor, optimism, and practicality. My goal is to help turn leadership overwhelm into leadership opportunity – together.

A Closing Thought

Leadership in dentistry is demanding but you’re not alone in it.

Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about creating the space for transformation to happen. Sometimes, that starts with a single moment of clarity.

One move really can make all the difference.

“Leadership isn’t about doing more – it’s about creating the conditions for better decisions.”
— Martin
